The practice

A Chicago studio by Ben Stagl and Ally Reza, merging material craft with digital fabrication in work that feels at once ancient and future-facing.

ANDII grows out of ChiLab Studio, Ben and Ally's custom fabrication shop, and its years of making ambitious work for artists, architects, brands, and public spaces. Here the center of gravity shifts from fabrication-for-hire to original authorship. Same hands. New voice.

The name is rooted in androgenii, the fusion of energies. AND is conjunction and partnership, a meeting point; II is two authors, two energies, two material histories. The work joins Ally's cast glass to Ben's metal in objects made to be lived with, released in editions for the collectible and gallery context.

Sky and Stone — blue calcite mirror
First collection

Sky and Stone

A body of work inspired by New Mexico: vast skies, mineral landscapes, desert light, and the contrast between celestial space and grounded matter.

Sky is light made physical — glass, atmosphere, reflection, celestial movement. Stone is grounded and mineral — gravity, metal, heat, permanence, form that holds its place. Mineral mass that anchors the luminous.

Sky and Stone — Mirrors

Sky, held

Polished mirror raised on raw mineral: sky caught and held in metal, anchored to stone. Each mirror is one of a kind, produced in series — a reflective form married to a single stone: calcite, selenite, obsidian, pyrite, sapphire. Large-scale floor mirrors in development.

Above and Below

This work draws raw minerals from the earth and sets them beneath forms that gather the sky.

The stone is never only a pedestal. It is half of the work — matter pulled from the ground, joined to light, glass, and reflection. Each piece is a meeting point: what lies below bound to what passes above. Selenite, calcite, obsidian, pyrite, and sapphire each bring their own weight, color, and memory into the object.

Selenite

Translucent gypsum, grown in long crystal beds. A lunar stone that carries light through its body and seems to glow from within.

Calcite

Soft sky-blue and luminous white. A cool, banded mass that reads like clouded light made solid — the nearest the ground comes to atmosphere.

Obsidian

Volcanic glass cooled in an instant. The oldest mirror humankind knew — dark, depthless, made for scrying.

Pyrite

Crystalline gold struck from rock. Hard geometry and a warm metallic fire that catches and throws the light.

Sapphire

Deep mineral blue, the weight of night held in a single stone. Rare, dense, and quietly luminous.
